Abstract
Teratomas are neoplasms composed of multiple tissues of kinds foreign to the part in which they arise. They may be benign or malignant, may arise in any part of the body, and are usually found in midline structures. They occur infrequently in
retroperitoneal areas and usually benign. Retroperitoneal teratomas occur commonly in infancy and childhood. Fifteen cases of retroperitoneal teratomas in infancy and childhood who were treated at the Seoul National University Children's Hospital
from
jan. 1982 to Dec. 1993 were reviewed.
@ES We obtained following results:
@EN 1) Retroperitoneal teratomas were usually noted in female (6.5 times more common than male) infants under the age of 1 year (more than 50%).
2) The most common symptom (more than 90%) was abdominal mass or distension.
3) Most of the tumors were benign mature type. In this study of 15 cases, 11 cases were mature type, 3 cases were immature type and 1 case was malignant.
4) The most valuable diagnostic tools were abdominal CT scan and then ultrasonography.
5) The serum ¥á-FP level was markedly elevated in the malignant case.
6) Surgical excision was curative in benign conditio, and multiagent adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery was effective in malignant teratoma.
